Looks are a big deal to the people in this office as they build and renovate homes and do interior design for very wealthy clients. He wants an ASUS UX501 "just like the girls have" in the office. Of course I never close the lid, I prefer multiple monitors with extended desktop. It works with the laptop closed and does have a power button right on top to easily turn the laptop on and off. Charging, monitor, keyboard, mouse, networking. I recently got a Dell wd15 dock with a new Latitude at work. I guess I could bill them for the time it takes to write the app. I don't see this as being something widely used because basically both machines need to be set up the same (same apps, enough drive space to sync everything, OneDrive installed with the same account on both machines - etc). It doesn't seem too difficult to write, but (with my current workload) it seems a bit of a waste of time.

If an app is installed on one machine (that may place an icon on the desktop for an app that is not installed on the second machine), some type of user notification needs to take place to remind the user to install the app on the second machine - but the icon should NOT be installed until the app exists - else what good is the icon?

If it changes, I need to run it so that both laptop and desktop are in sync both file-wise and visually. I also need to be monitoring for changes to the file that the icon sizes, desktop resolution, and icon locations get written to. So the only thing I really have to do is monitor for changes to files in the "Desktop" folder and then write the icon sizes, desktop resolution, and icon locations to a file that is synced using OneDrive. Well, for the most skipped the Google Chrome desktop link for some reason - not sure why, after all a link is just a file, right? OneDrive handles syncing the actual files between the machines. Surely I am not the first person to come across this request. Truth be told, I could probably write an app to do this, but I was hoping for a ready-made solution. In their eyes, they only need ask and I make it happen. I routinely do things that (to them) seems like magic. You wouldnt expect all the crap to magically transfer from the commuting car to the weekend family car and back again on MondayĪhhh, but the technological neophytes do expect it. That right there - use 1 device, with a dock for big screen fun. He protests loudly when asked to change, learn anything new or take on a single responsibility. He wants everything to be as easy as possible.

He is also the business owner, and refuses to learn anything that he can make someone else bend to his will - that includes how to use a dock.

He's ADHD and (in many ways) like a large child. I have mentioned this, and they have experienced a forced reboot once or twice that resulted in lost data, but that has not changed their behavior - so I cannot depend on him changing his behavior (or rebooting the desktop when he changes from using the laptop to the desktop).Īny suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

While they are all using battery backups, that is no guarantee that any power outages will resolve before the batteries run down, or that a Microsoft update will not force a reboot. He, and others in his office, have a very bad habit of leaving their apps and documents open every night.

The only problem there is that he never restarts his desktop PC unless he absolutely has to. I could set it to save every 15 minutes and set each machine to load the current layout when it is started.

There is a free application called DesktopOK that will save your desktop layout, and it will do so in 15 minute increments, but it has no ability to (a) watch the desktop for changes and auto-save if items move, are deleted from, or are added to the desktop or (b) to watch for changes to the layout file and apply those changes to the current desktop. I have used OneDrive to share his desktop on both the desktop PC and the laptop, but that doesn't save WHERE each icon or file is on the desktop, or icons sizes and such. Many times he will be out of range of a decent connection to do remote work, and I seriously doubt he could do it (with all of the print settings and things that he could screw up). No.RDP (or any other remote desktop solution) will not work. He wants the laptop and desktop to always mirror one another. He is a genius at his thing, and a complete neophyte when it comes to his smartphone, desktop, or laptop. But what he is awesome at has NOTHING to do with technology. I have a user who is awesome at what he does.
